You are on your Etsy journey and desperately searching for winning products. You go to an Etsy research tool, type in a keyword, and immediately start scanning the results for high search volume and low competition. After researching for hours, you are disappointed because you could not find any winning product. You feel exhausted, and the market feels saturated. But what if I told you that you have been doing your Etsy research wrong? You are ignoring low-volume keywords when you should be considering them. In this article, I will discuss 5 reasons why you should not ignore low search volume keywords in your Etsy research.
Why low search volume ≠ low demand on Etsy?
1. Gifts Search
Etsy is widely seen as the place to find gifts. A large portion of Etsy buyers search with gift intent. They are shopping and simultaneously looking for gift ideas. For instance, in the screenshot below, the EverBee keyword research tool shows that the keywords related to ‘capo’ have a very low monthly search volume, averaging around 152.

However, if you look at one of the best-selling products on Etsy, it is the guitar capo. If you look at the keyword analysis of this product in the Everbee product analytics tool, you will notice that it ranks for various high-volume gift intent searches, such as ‘father day gifts,’ ‘gift for him,’ ‘music teacher gift,’ ‘christmas gifts,’ and ‘gift for musician.’

The monthly sales for this product are 330 per month. Furthermore, its monthly views are 9k, which far exceeds the monthly search volume of 152. Therefore, while shoppers are not directly searching for this product, they still find the product as a useful gift item.
2. Visual Appeal
Etsy buyers also buy a specific product because of its visual appeal. Wedding invitations are a perfect example to explain this. In the screenshot below, the EverBee keyword research tool shows that the monthly search volume for the keywords related to ‘doodle wedding invitation’ is quite low, averaging around 300.

However, these invitations are selling extremely well on Etsy due to their visual appeal. In the screenshot below, you can see an Etsy shop selling doodle-themed wedding templates has made around 31k sales during the past three years, which is huge. Furthermore, this shop is selling its invitations at three times the average price, with an estimated three-year revenue of $415,282. This shop is one of many shops that are performing extremely well with these invitations.

In this case, Etsy shoppers ended up buying these appealing invitations without specifically searching for them.
3. Conversion Rate
If low-volume keywords indicate the specific buying intent, they typically have a better conversion rate. For instance, someone searching for ‘funny cat gamer shirt’ has a stronger buying intent than someone searching for ‘gamer shirt.’ Therefore, you can get more sales from a highly specific product due to a higher conversion rate.
4. Trending Keyword
A keyword may have low search volume because it is trending. You have to analyze the current demand, conversion rates, and product listings on Etsy to check the future potential of a keyword.
5. Synonym Keywords
It can also be possible that a more popular synonym exists for a low search volume keyword. For instance, the keyword ‘travel journal’ has a higher search volume than the keyword ‘vacation journal.’
In conclusion, you should not ignore low search volume keywords with less competition in your Etsy research. They can help you find profitable products on Etsy.
